You turn west and take the stairs to the next floor.
The ceilings in the house are tall and the long flight has a 180° twist at the halfway point; when you reach the top, you are turned back around to face east.
You find yourself stood in another corridor. There is a slight kink to it where the stairs join, otherwise it seems to run parallel to the one on the ground floor. Along the length of the landing are small decorative sconces with buzzing electric bulbs. How nice to have some light, even if it is a little headache inducing.
Once again you are met with a selection of doors. There are four in the northern wall of the corridor and three on the southern side. All but one of them – the door furthest from you on the south – is openable. You update your mental map of the house with this new information after taking a quick peek inside the rooms that are available to you. The floor largely consists of spacious and well-furnished bedrooms with a single additional door inside each of them, a linen cupboard that also contains some cleaning materials, and a grand, old-fashioned bathroom.
It seems clear to you that one of the bedrooms is the ‘main’ bedroom. At first glance, it seems better appointed, better outfitted, and more used than the others. You note with interest that unlike the other bedrooms, this one has two doors inside it. One of them looks as though it might lead to the locked room.
Also of note is another staircase that starts at the east end of the corridor and goes up. This mostly likely leads to the attic.
