Harvest Moon, pt 16

This is part of a text adventure series to celebrate the spookiest of months, October (and beyond!). Full information about what’s happening can be found here. It is free to read, but in order to vote on what happens next, you will need to be a Patron.  To become a Patron, you can find my Patreon page here.

Map of the known area

Your inventory:

  • A small flashlight with dead batteries
  • Nick’s car-related paperwork
  • A generic fast food straw
  • A napkin containing some mushed-up sausage rolls
  • A lighter [1 use left]
  • Half a packet of mints
  • A pen

You walk down the landing, past the doors, and ascend the stairs to the attic.

Much like the flight from the ground floor, these stairs also take 180° twist that sees you turned around.

There is no light up here. That’s the first thing you learn, and you learn it quickly. As soon as the landing drops out of sight, so too do does your ability to gauge your surroundings.

The staircase is narrow, the steps are rickety and – as you discover with a painful bang on the head – the roof, or at least the rafters, are low at the top. It’s also very, very warm up here. The air almost feels wet.

Bending low, you make your way across the floor and promptly come into contact with a wall. Fortunately your shoulder takes the brunt of that particular impact. Dragging your hands across the wall, you eventually feel a split, then hinges, then a door handle. You give the handle a tug, but the door doesn’t budge. It’s locked. You’re not entirely sure, but you think you can hear something on the other side responding to your efforts. When you stop to listen, it stops. Tricky to be certain, but it might have sounded like laboured breathing.

You continue to feel your way around the small space, but find nothing else. You shudder to think what you might be brushing your hands against as you swat a cobweb from your cheek.

With nothing else to discover up here until you can find a light source and a key, you turn yourself around until your fingers close around the topmost rise of the stairs. Once sure of your footing, you head back down to the first floor.

Where would you like to go next?

  1. Go back downstairs
  2. Guestroom 1
  3. The bathroom
  4. Guestroom 2
  5. Guestroom 3
  6. The main bedroom
  7. Investigate the linen cupboard
