Harvest Moon, pt 18

This is part of a text adventure series to celebrate the spookiest of months, October (and beyond!). Full information about what’s happening can be found here. It is free to read, but in order to vote on what happens next, you will need to be a Patron.  To become a Patron, you can find my Patreon page here.

Map of the known area

Your inventory:

  • A small flashlight with dead batteries
  • Nick’s car-related paperwork
  • A generic fast food straw
  • A napkin containing some mushed-up sausage rolls
  • A lighter [1 use left]
  • Half a packet of mints
  • A pen

You leave the main bedroom and slip into the study. The aggressive compound scent of perfume and mold are left behind as the door closes at your back. You take in a few grateful breaths of more neutral air. It’s gently laced with old leather and chemicals.

It’s dark in here. There’s no light source except for the moon through the windows. It lends the space an uncommonly eerie atmosphere that gets worse the more time you spend there.

As you might expect, there’s a door to your right: It’s the locked door that leads to the landing. You don’t bother trying it – noting the type of lock, you know it’ll be unopenable from both sides.

Around the room – except for where there are windows and doors – runs a ring of hip-high bookshelves. These are occupied by a mixture of books and what you think might be termed as ‘curios’. They suggest that the space is used by a mind inclined towards scientific pursuits. Mostly natural history and the macabre if the suspended samples in glass jars and pinned insects are anything to go by. You grimace at some of the more ghastly looking items.

You idly note that there appears to be some archaic looking scientific equipment on a table to one side. You haven’t got a clue if it’s functional or what it might be for besides some sort of chemistry. You think you remember some of the shaped glassware from school science.

Towards the head of the room is an expansive desk. A unlit candelabra sits on top of it along with some stacks of books, a pot of pens, and a carriage clock. It informs you that the time is now 1am. Time certainly flies when you’re having fun.

There’s something else of interest in this room: It’s a tightly coiled spiral staircase that descends directly down. It must lead to the library.

So, what next?

  1. Investigate the desk (will require using the lighter)
  2. Go down the spiral staircase
  3. Go back into the main bedroom
