Map of the known area

Your inventory:

  • A small flashlight
  • Nick’s car-related paperwork
  • A generic fast food straw
  • A napkin containing some mushed-up sausage rolls
  • Half a packet of mints
  • A pen
  • A fieldbook about common countryside plants

Without much in the way of options, you find yourself stepping out onto the landing after Violet. She is further down the corridor from you, towards the attic stairs. She has opened what you recognise as the linen cupboard door and is busying herself by selecting and pulling out clean sheets with some degree of forcefulness. You can hear her muttering to herself.

You watch for a moment as you consider your next move, then notice something that makes you stand up a little: Hanging on the inside of the linen cupboard door is a small set of keys. They’re not as daunting as the archaic hoop at Violet’s waist, but there they are all tantalising and mysterious. You get the feeling they would make your passage through the house a little easier.

You walk over and make to take them when Violet stops you by administering a hard slap on the back of your hand.

“Excuse me,” she snaps. “Those are mine. You can’t have them.”

Caught off guard by the speed at which she turned on you, you drop your hand to your waist.

“This is my cupboard,” she tells you. “I don’t want you coming in here, dirtying things up. I’ve got enough trouble with everyone else. Now shoo, and don’t think I won’t hear you opening it up again.”

She grabs the fresh linen and, with her arms full, kicks the door shut behind her. Eyeing you with open suspicion, she strides back to the guestroom you’ve emerged from and props the door open to facilitate her coming and going. And, presumably, keep an ear out for you.

If you want those keys, you’ll need to create a distraction. You were able to hear the cupboard door opening from your room, but you reckon that if you took you time, you could open it quietly and reach in undetected. Considering your inventory, you feel that you have a couple of options available to you. Of course, you could just ignore the keys and get back on with exploring.

  1. Sod the keys. Go back downstairs
  2. Sod the keys. Go into the main bedroom.
  3. Sod the keys. Go into the main bathroom.
  4. Make a mess in another room (will use the sausage rolls)
  5. Block up one of the toilets (will use Nick’s car-related paperwork)
