“What can I do to help?” you ask.
“It has been nice to have company,” she says. “Everyone is busy, or cannot stand the sight of me. Once, I used to have a beautiful room, but now I stay up here, hidden and alone. Truth be told, I can’t stand the sight of myself, so I don’t blame her.” She pauses. “Them. I don’t blame them.”
You raise an eyebrow.
“If I could have anything, it would be peace,” she sighs. “I think I understand why Mother did what she did, and I confess that I have enjoyed my ill-gotten years. But I am so very, very tired now. Perhaps I’d feel differently if my most renewal had gone as planned. But it didn’t. And here I am. Here a part of me is.
“I don’t much enjoy this life. If it were up to me, I would be left here to wither away. I don’t think it would take long. I could lie here, watch the skies, and slip away like an untended house plant.”
She smiles to herself.
“But… That’s quite enough of that. You didn’t come up here to hear me wallow. In fact, I’m not sure why you came up here at all. And now we have spoken, I can see you’re eager to get away. I get the sense you have something to achieve, and I shan’t stop you. If anything, I would like to help as you have helped me.
“Unfortunately, the only thing I can advise is that if you have some larger stake in what’s happening here, then you must employ a combination of cunning and haste. Mother will be completing the renewal at 6am. It is her turn to undergo the process this time. She will be making final preparations in the forest.
“If is not a simple case of intervening, however. The process will already be underway. If you wish to stop all of this – as I would very much like you to – you will need to find out a little more about what it all entails and how best to disrupt it. I believe I have told you all I can to facilitate this.”
“Good luck,” she says as she turns her attention back to the window.
You leave the attic, closing the door behind you, and descend the stairs to the landing. You can’t hear anyone else. The Violet you left cleaning up must have finished and gone elsewhere.
Where would you like to go next?

- Go into the main bedroom.
